EMA appoints Matthew Dearing as Head of Legal

The Employers and Manufacturers Association (EMA) has appointed employment lawyer Matthew Dearing as its new Head of Legal and General Counsel. The move is intended to strengthen specialist support for New Zealand businesses amid significant changes to workplace and employment laws.

Dearing returns to the EMA after previously serving in the organization’s legal team from 2011 to 2022, including a tenure as Head of Legal and General Counsel from 2017 to 2022. His professional background includes advising a range of entities from small businesses to large multinational employers on matters such as personal grievances, restructures, and collective bargaining.

EMA Chief Executive John Fraser-Mackenzie noted that Dearing’s expertise and familiarity with the organization will assist members in managing risk and navigating emerging legal issues.
