Brazil's EMS launches first domestic semaglutide weight‑loss pen Ozivy

Brazilian pharmaceutical company EMS has announced the commercial launch of Ozivy, the first semaglutide‑based weight‑loss pen produced in Brazil by chemical synthesis. The product will be available in pharmacies from 15 June 2024 at an initial unit price of R$ 452, rising to R$ 498 after the introductory period. EMS offers a promotional three‑month starter pack costing R$ 863.23 in total (about R$ 287 per month) for patients beginning treatment. More than 500 000 pens will be supplied initially, with distribution across major pharmacy chains nationwide. Production will take place at EMS’s peptide plant in Hortolândia, São Paulo, which can manufacture up to 40 million pens per year following an investment of over R$ 1.2 billion in research, development and infrastructure. The product received ANVISA registration after the patent expiry of Novo Nordisk’s Ozempic. EMS prices are roughly 30 % lower than imported alternatives, aiming to broaden access to obesity and type‑2‑diabetes therapy that previously cost around R$ 1 000 per month. A two‑pen combo of 1.0 mg is also planned for R$ 896, though its launch date is not yet set.
