EMA-LION enamelware factory in Bonyhád enters liquidation

EMA-LION Bonyhádi Zománcáru Kft., Hungary’s last traditional enamelware factory, has entered liquidation. The closure marks the end of a manufacturing history dating back to 1909.

The company’s financial situation became critical, with reports indicating that some employees had not received their full wages. A liquidator will be appointed by the court to take control of the company, manage the termination of employment contracts, and oversee the payment of outstanding wages, notice period benefits, and severance pay.

Approximately 150 workers are affected by the shutdown. The Vasas Trade Union Federation is working to ensure employees depart under the best possible conditions and is exploring local employment opportunities. The Mayor of Bonyhád, Ibolya Filóné Ferencz, stated that the municipality will act as a mediator to help displaced workers find new roles, noting that the region currently faces a labor shortage.

Founded by Béla Perczel, the plant originally produced toys before specializing in enamelware, including iconic red pots, mugs, and large cauldrons that have been staples in Hungarian households for generations.
