Email compliance: Google warns senders over unsubscription practices

Email senders are facing increased scrutiny regarding unsubscription compliance and footer regulations. Google’s Postmaster Tools has been issuing “Needs work” warnings to bulk senders who fail to remove users from mailing lists within 48 hours of an unsubscribe request. While technical implementation of the “one-click unsubscribe” via RFC 8058 may be compliant, failure to honor the actual request can lead to users marking emails as spam or blocking senders permanently.

Beyond platform-specific requirements, email footers carry significant legal responsibilities. Regulations such as CAN-SPAM in the United States, CASL in Canada, and GDPR in the European Union mandate that commercial emails include a physical mailing address and a clear, functioning unsubscribe mechanism. Neglecting these elements can result in compliance risks and damage brand trust, as hidden or broken opt-out links often drive recipients to file spam complaints instead of opting out through proper channels.
