Email deliverability and inbox placement metrics explained

Email marketing performance relies on two distinct metrics: deliverability and inbox placement. Deliverability measures whether a mail server accepts an email without bouncing, while inbox placement determines whether that accepted email reaches the primary inbox or is routed to spam or promotional folders.

Data from Validity’s 2026 Email Deliverability Benchmark indicates that global inbox placement was 87.2 percent in 2025, meaning approximately one in eight messages landed in spam or went missing. This challenge is compounded by stricter enforcement from providers like Gmail, which began ramping up requirements in November 2025. These requirements include mandatory authentication, maintaining a spam rate below 0.3 percent, and providing one-click unsubscribes for marketing mail.

To manage these metrics, various specialized tools are used for seed-list testing, spam analysis, and authentication auditing. Notable tools include GlockApps for API-based testing, Mailgun for optimization, and Google Postmaster Tools for monitoring Gmail performance.
