Embraer targets African market with 13-tonne cargo aircraft
Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer is targeting the African market with cargo versions of its first-generation E-Jets, specifically the E190. These converted passenger jets are capable of carrying up to 13 tonnes of cargo.
The strategy aims to address connectivity gaps in Africa, where the continent accounts for less than 6% of global air traffic despite a population of over 1.2 billion. Embraer intends to use these smaller aircraft to service thinner routes that may not justify the capacity of large Boeing or Airbus jets, providing a more frequent and efficient alternative to unreliable road and rail infrastructure.
By installing large cargo doors and strengthening cabin floors, Embraer can transport time-sensitive goods such as medicine, fresh food, and e-commerce parcels. The company already maintains a presence on the continent through partnerships with airlines including Airlink, Kenya Airways, and EgyptAir.
