Embrapa develops technology to convert sugar into chemical precursors

Embrapa, the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation, has developed a platform to produce high-value chemical compounds from sugars. In laboratory tests, researchers used modified yeast to produce p-hydroxybenzoic acid (PHBA), a chemical precursor used in the manufacturing of polymers, medicines, cosmetics, and agricultural inputs.

Developed by Embrapa Agroenergia in partnership with the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research in Germany, the methodology utilizes molecular analysis tools to understand how microorganisms utilize sugars and to identify production limitations. This research aims to expand the use of renewable raw materials in industrial processes that currently rely on petroleum derivatives.

The success of this route will depend on its performance outside of laboratory settings. The current platform allows for integrated observation of cellular reactions, enabling researchers to identify bottlenecks and guide modifications to improve production efficiency.
