Embrapa identifies rice materials resistant to leafhopper pest
Embrapa has identified two rice materials that demonstrate increased resistance to the rice leafhopper (Tagosodes orizicolus), a pest capable of causing total crop loss through sap consumption and virus transmission.
In controlled trials conducted in Santo Antônio de Goiás, the BRS A705 cultivar and the BGA 6914 genotype showed lower insect preference and higher nymph mortality compared to other varieties. Specifically, nymph mortality reached 88% in the BGA 6914 genotype and 64% in the BRS A705 cultivar.
While BRS A705 is already a commercially available cultivar, BGA 6914 is a genotype held in the Embrapa Rice and Bean Germplasm Active Bank intended for future breeding. Researchers noted that while these laboratory and greenhouse results are promising for genetic management, they do not yet guarantee the same level of protection in open field conditions.
