Brazil weather: INMET issues orange alert for severe storms across six states

The National Institute of Meteorology (INMET) has issued an orange alert for severe storms across six Brazilian states: São Paulo, Paraná, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo, and Mato Grosso do Sul. The alert, valid through Wednesday, warns of potential wind gusts up to 100 km/h, heavy rainfall reaching 100 mm in 24 hours, and hail.

In the Presidente Prudente region of São Paulo, a massive storm recorded over 21,000 electrical discharges during a 12-hour period, with wind speeds hitting 70 km/h. This event has prompted emergency responses from Energisa and local authorities to address infrastructure damage and power outages caused by fallen trees.

Other regions are also facing instability. Goiás is under alert for winds exceeding 60 km/h in 104 municipalities due to a cold front. In Mato Grosso, temperatures may reach 41°C alongside potential thunderstorms. Meanwhile, the state of Rio Grande do Sul faces risks of isolated storms with winds above 80 km/h.

Authorities, including the Civil Defense, have advised residents in affected areas to avoid flooded streets, stay away from trees and metal structures during lightning, and monitor official updates to mitigate risks of landslides and flooding, especially as soil saturation levels remain high from previous rains.
