Embroidery revival highlights Portuguese craft traditions
Embroidery is experiencing a resurgence as a popular hobby, valued for its ability to calm the mind through repetitive movement, improve fine motor skills, and provide visible results.
Portugal possesses one of Europe’s richest embroidery heritages. Notable regional traditions include the ‘lenços dos namorados’ from Vila Verde, the silk-on-linen embroidery of Castelo Branco, and the certified embroidery of Madeira. Other distinct styles are found in Viana do Castelo, Nisa, and Guimarães.
Beginners can start with basic tools such as a medium-sized hoop, cotton fabric, six-strand embroidery floss, large-eye needles, and small scissors. Mastering four essential stitches—backstitch, satin stitch, knot stitch, and stem stitch—allows for the creation of various items like pillowcases or small framed pieces.
