Çeşme Beach Fight Over Umbrella Rights Sparks Violence

At Altınkum Beach in Çeşme, Turkey, a tourist tried to set up an umbrella on the sand. Staff of a private beach club claimed the section was leased to them and ordered the tourist to stop. The verbal dispute quickly turned physical; several employees assaulted the tourist, and a woman who intervened was also struck.

The incident was captured on by‑standers' phones and prompted a police and gendarmerie response. Authorities said a criminal investigation would be opened. The clash highlights the ongoing controversy in Turkish coastal towns over public beach access versus privately managed sections, a dispute that frequently surfaces each summer season.

Local officials and tourism operators are expected to review the legal status of beach‑side rentals after the event.
