Ecuador football eyes Japan friendly and Copa Ecuador quarter‑finals

Five clubs – Gualaceo, Independiente del Valle, Liga de Quito, Universidad Católica and Barcelona SC – have secured places in the quarter‑finals of the 2026 Copa Ecuador, with the remaining match‑ups to be decided later in the tournament.

Emelec has been active in the transfer market, confirming the arrivals of midfielder Jefferson Valverde from Delfín and forward Ronie Carrillo from Mushuc Runa. Carrillo turned down a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia to join the Guayaquil side, signing a one‑year contract with an option for two more years.

The Ecuador national team will compete in a four‑team friendly tournament in Japan on 1 and 5 October 2026, facing the hosts Japan and later either Panama or New Zealand, depending on earlier results. The squad will also play a preparatory friendly against South Korea on 24 September 2026 in Suwon, while the federation continues its search for a new head coach after Sebastián Beccacece’s departure.
