Emelec faces uncertain Copa Sudamericana prospects after defeat
Emelec faces a critical sporting crisis following a 3-2 defeat against Guayaquil City in the qualifying tournament for the 2027 Copa Sudamericana. The loss leaves the club at the bottom of its group with 39 points, trailing leader Libertad FC. This defeat follows a previous loss to Libertad FC, leaving the team without points in the current quadrangular.
Former player Marcos Mondaini criticized the squad's performance, stating that Emelec “has gotten used to losing” and “was afraid to win” after squandering a two-goal lead against Guayaquil City.
Club president José David Jiménez noted that while qualifying for international tournaments remains the sporting goal, the club is currently prioritizing institutional stability. Despite the difficult outlook, a slim mathematical possibility remains if the team finishes second in the quadrangular and favorable conditions arise in the LigaPro hexagonal.
