Emergency communication technology evolves from maritime telegraphy to mobile apps
Developments in emergency communication technology are being highlighted through both historical perspectives and modern digital tools in Germany.
The Schifffahrtsmuseum Unterweser will host a lecture on October 27 regarding the history of maritime distress signaling. The presentation will trace the evolution from early telegraphy to modern wireless communication, including the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS). The event notes the historical connection between the Deutsche Gesellschaft zur Rettung Schiffbrüchiger (DGzRS) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), both founded in 1865.
In the realm of modern mobile technology, the German government's Nora app provides a way to send silent emergency calls. The app is designed to assist when telephone networks fail or when users are unable to speak due to disabilities, accidents, or medical emergencies. To prevent misuse, the app requires registration via SMS verification and an automated confirmation call. Users can store sensitive medical data locally on their devices, which is only transmitted to emergency services during an actual emergency.
