Emergency medicine experts from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center have identified five specific types of pain that require immediate medical attention.

The critical symptoms include:

1. Sudden and persistent pain: Any severe, new pain that does not subside. 2. Chest pain: Often linked to heart attacks, pulmonary embolisms, or aortic tears, especially in elderly patients or those with high blood pressure and diabetes. 3. Leg pain with swelling or redness: A potential sign of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), particularly in those recovering from surgery or long flights. 4. Tearing sensation in the upper back: This may indicate a serious issue with the aorta. 5. Specific lower abdominal pain: Pain in the lower abdomen or sides could signal kidney stones, kidney infections, or appendicitis.

Medical professionals advise that while urgent care centers are available for non-emergencies, these specific symptoms warrant an immediate visit to the emergency room.
