Emergency room protocols and patient rights
Recognizing medical emergencies and understanding patient rights are critical components of emergency care. According to the American College of Emergency Physicians, warning signs that necessitate an emergency department visit include unconsciousness, uncontrolled bleeding, sudden severe pain, difficulty breathing, chest pain, and changes in mental state. Specific heart attack symptoms for men and women, such as shortness of breath, jaw pain, or nausea, should also be treated as emergencies.
In cases where a medical error is suspected, such as a missed diagnosis or medication mistake, patients have specific rights. Patients are entitled to clear explanations regarding their diagnosis, treatment choices, and discharge instructions. Furthermore, under HIPAA, patients have the right to access their complete medical records, including nursing notes, lab results, and imaging, to help determine if a complication was a medical error. If records are found to be inaccurate, patients may request corrections through the Department of Health and Human Services.
