Emergency services attend to 125 people at Baltic Sea swimming facility

Emergency services and police responded to a large-scale incident at a subtropical swimming facility in the Weissenhäuser Strand holiday resort in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. On Tuesday evening, approximately 125 bathers, aged between 3 and 75, required medical attention after complaining of irritated airways.

Two adults sustained minor injuries and were transported to a clinic, though they were able to leave the same evening. While initial suspicions pointed toward elevated chlorine levels, measurements conducted by both the fire department and the facility operators did not confirm this. The operator stated that chloramines, which form naturally when chlorine reacts with sweat or skin particles, are a normal occurrence in chlorinated pools and emphasized that air and water quality are continuously monitored.

Police have launched an investigation into potential negligent bodily harm to determine the exact cause of the respiratory irritation. The swimming facility reopened on Wednesday.
