Domogled-Valea Cernei National Park forest fire affects hundreds of hectares
A major forest fire continues to affect the Domogled – Valea Cernei National Park near Băile Herculane, Romania. The incident involves two distinct fire events: a first fire that occurred between August 9 and August 25, 2026, which was reportedly triggered by lightning and affected approximately 37 hectares, and a second fire that broke out on September 2, 2026.
The second fire has significantly expanded, with reports estimating the affected area between 392 and 423 hectares. The fire poses a severe threat to the protected Banat Black Pine, a species of European importance. Due to the extremely rugged, rocky terrain and steep cliffs, ground access is often impossible, necessitating the use of helicopters to transport personnel and drop water. Two Black Hawk helicopters from the General Inspectorate of Aviation have been deployed, having dropped over 50 tons of water on the hotspots.
Environmental organizations, including Agent Green, have criticized the government's management of the crisis, labeling it an environmental crime and calling for more intensive intervention. While authorities have mobilized over 100 personnel, including military firefighters, foresters, and volunteers, the lack of precipitation and high temperatures continue to hamper containment efforts.
