Emergency services in Spain promote life-saving CPR awareness

Emergency medical services in Spain are highlighting the critical importance of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) following recent statistics on cardiac arrest interventions. In the Valencian Community, SAMU medical teams have reanimated 1,841 patients in cardiac arrest so far this year, with 902 cases in Valencia, 661 in Alicante, and 278 in Castellón.

To mark World CPR Day, the Valencian Health Emergency Service (SESCV) is conducting awareness campaigns in various provinces to teach the public how to identify cardiac arrest and perform basic life support. These sessions focus on the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and the importance of immediate action.

In the Basque Country, Osakidetza emergency teams attend approximately 600 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests annually. Data indicates that while most incidents occur at home, fewer than 45% of witnesses begin resuscitation maneuvers before paramedics arrive. Medical experts, including anesthesiologist Covadonga Peralta from Cruces University Hospital, urge the public to act without fear, noting that emergency operators via 112 can provide real-time guidance to bystanders during these life-saving moments.
