Grêmio former player Émerson Leal dies at 46
Former professional footballer Émerson Leal has died at the age of 46 in Esteio, Rio Grande do Sul. The former defensive midfielder had been hospitalized in intensive care at Hospital São Camilo following a heart attack suffered during an amateur football match with friends on October 20.
Leal was a product of Grêmio’s youth academy, joining the professional squad in 2001. During his tenure with the club, he was part of the championship-winning teams for both the Campeonato Gaúcho and the Copa do Brasil in 2001. His professional career was previously impacted by cardiac issues; in 2004, medical examinations identified heart irregularities that led to a period of inactivity before he eventually returned to professional play in 2007.
In addition to Grêmio, Leal played for several other clubs, including Sport, Juventude, Madureira, América-RN, and Novo Hamburgo. Grêmio released an official statement expressing deep sorrow and offering solidarity to his family and friends.
