Emfuleni Municipality employees arrested for alleged electricity fraud

Five employees of the Emfuleni Local Municipality have been arrested by the Gauteng Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) for alleged fraud, theft, and tampering with essential infrastructure.

The suspects, who work within the municipality’s Revenue and Electrical departments, allegedly operated a scheme where they misrepresented themselves as authorized officials. They reportedly instructed clients to pay fees directly into their personal bank accounts in exchange for reconnecting electricity supplies that had been previously disconnected by the municipality.

National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe stated that these unauthorized reconnections resulted in electricity theft and financial losses for the municipality. The suspects are expected to make their first appearance in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrates’ Court on Monday, August 24, 2026. Police indicated that the investigation is ongoing and further arrests may be anticipated.
