Emil Agyekum Sets New German 400m Hurdles Record at Athletics Championships

Emil Agyekum won the men’s 400‑metre hurdles title at the German Athletics Championships in Bochum‑Wattenscheid, recording a championship record of 47.65 seconds. The performance broke Harald Schmid’s long‑standing mark of 48.02 seconds set in 1985 and followed Agyekum’s earlier national‑record run of 47.45 seconds, securing his place among Europe’s leading hurdlers and qualifying him for the European Championships in Birmingham (10‑16 August).

In the sprint events, Heiko Gussmann of Blankenloch claimed the 100‑metre silver medal with a personal best of 10.06 seconds, also meeting the qualifying standard for Birmingham. Merlin Hummel retained his hammer‑throw title with a winning distance of 79.18 m, while teammate Sören Klose threw 78.18 m to earn a direct qualification slot. Javelin specialist Julia Ulbricht won gold with a personal best of 61.58 m, also securing a berth for the continental championships. The meeting produced several other national titles and qualification marks ahead of the upcoming European competition.
