Emil Agyekum secured the silver medal in the 400m hurdles at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham. Running a time of 47.87 seconds, Agyekum became the first German athlete to win a European medal in this event in approximately 40 years, ending a drought dating back to the era of Harald Schmid.

Norway's Karsten Warholm won the gold medal with a time of 46.63 seconds. Ismail Nezir of Turkey took the bronze medal, finishing in 48.26 seconds. Owe Fischer-Breiholz of Germany finished fifth with a time of 48.56 seconds.

Agyekum, who holds the German national record for the event with a time of 47.45 seconds set in London, noted that the silver medal was the maximum possible success given Warholm's performance.
