Italy hunting season begins amid biodiversity reform debate

The 2026/2027 hunting season officially commenced across various Italian regions, including Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany, and Umbria, on September 20, 2026. Regional authorities have implemented specific schedules and safety protocols, such as restricted morning hours in certain areas and mandatory minimum distances from roads and buildings to ensure public safety.

Simultaneously, the start of the season has triggered intense debate regarding a proposed hunting reform bill (DDL Caccia). Environmental and animal rights organizations, including WWF, LAV, Legambiente, and LIPU, have denounced the legislation as a “sparatutto” (shoot-all) law. They argue that the reform, which seeks to extend hunting periods and expand the list of huntable species, poses significant risks to biodiversity and could violate European Union conservation obligations.

Critics highlight that the expansion of hunting activities comes at a vulnerable time for wildlife, following extreme heat and drought. While regional officials emphasize the importance of following regulations and maintaining dialogue with technical bodies like ISPRA, activists warn that the legislative acceleration lacks sufficient scientific consultation and threatens protected species.
