Emilia-Romagna launches eighth edition of Monasteri Aperti
The eighth edition of ‘Monasteri Aperti’ (Open Monasteries) is underway in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy. Organized by APT Servizi Emilia-Romagna in collaboration with the Emilia-Romagna Episcopal Conference, the initiative opens the doors of monasteries, abbeys, cathedrals, and sanctuaries to the public.
This year’s edition focuses on Saint Francis of Assisi, marking the 800th anniversary of his death. The program, integrated into the ‘Visit Emilia’ initiative, spans the provinces of Parma, Piacenza, and Reggio Emilia. It aims to connect art, spirituality, nature, and local flavors, often following traditional walking paths through the plains and the Apennines.
Pierangelo Romersi, director of Visit Emilia, noted that the initiative allows visitors to experience the region at a slower pace, discovering Romanesque churches and historic cloisters. A notable site mentioned is the Sanctuary of San Francesco del Prato in Parma, a Gothic Franciscan jewel that has transitioned from being used as a prison for nearly two centuries back to its religious vocation.
