Emilia-Romagna officials seek protections for repurposed crime assets

Emilia-Romagna regional president Michele de Pascale and legality assessor Elena Mazzoni are calling for greater legal protections for municipalities that repurpose assets confiscated from organized crime. The officials emphasized the need for legal certainty and state support to prevent public resources from being wasted when judicial decisions later alter the status of these properties.

The call follows a specific case in Bellaria Igea Marina involving the Reabita apartment group. The property, originally confiscated during the ‘Coffee Break/Cartesio’ anti-mafia operations, was assigned to the municipality for social use in 2022. After receiving over 440,000 euros in regional, municipal, and national public investment, the building was transformed into housing for people with disabilities.

However, a subsequent revocation of the confiscation by the Catanzaro Court of Appeal has created a complex situation that threatens the institutional work and significant public funds invested in the project. De Pascale noted that this case highlights a regulatory critical point that must be addressed to protect social reuse initiatives.
