Italy Supreme Court issues final ruling on 2016 Andria-Corato train collision
The Italian Supreme Court of Cassation has issued a final ruling regarding the 2016 Andria-Corato train collision, which resulted in 23 deaths and 58 injuries. The court confirmed the sentences for station master Vito Piccarreta, receiving six years and three months of imprisonment, and train driver Nicola Lorizzo, receiving six years and nine months. Simultaneously, the court upheld the acquittals for Ferrotramviaria and its former executives, Massimo Nitti and Michele Ronchi. Despite these final sentences, the Deputy Prosecutor General, Ferdinando Lignola, expressed strong opposition to the ruling, arguing that the responsibility for the disaster should not rest solely on the two railway workers but should also include the company's overall safety management. He has requested a new appeal process to address the corporate liability of Ferrotramviaria.
In separate legal developments, eight local police officers in Rimini are under investigation by the Prosecutor's Office for allegations including forgery, private violence, slander, and injury. Investigators have conducted searches to collect electronic evidence related to the suspected misconduct. Additionally, authorities have uncovered a major transnational VAT fraud involving 18 suspects and a network of shell companies across Europe, leading to the seizure of 25 million euros in assets.
