Italy political landscape shifts ahead of 2027 elections
Italian political parties are actively restructuring and forming alliances in anticipation of the 2027 general elections. Within the center-left, Democratic Party (PD) leader Elly Schlein has called for a broader progressive alliance, emphasizing the need for unity to challenge Giorgia Meloni’s government, which she characterized as ineffective.
Matteo Renzi of Italia Viva also advocated for a wider center-left coalition, warning that failure to unite could lead to significant electoral losses. Meanwhile, within the center-right, internal debates continue regarding the leadership of Forza Italia, with some members calling for a change in leadership from Antonio Tajani.
On the government side, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has engaged in pragmatic political maneuvering, including an agreement with Cateno De Luca to secure parliamentary stability and territorial support. Additionally, Fratelli d’Italia has begun expanding its local presence by opening new headquarters to facilitate grassroots engagement and campaign preparations.
