Italy tourism shows regional growth and regulatory challenges

The Italian tourism sector is showing varied regional developments. In Friuli Venezia Giulia, tourism sales through the operator Railtour Suisse surged by 76 percent in 2026 compared to the previous year. This growth follows a strong 2025, where the region recorded over 11 million tourist arrivals, a 6.5 percent increase from 2024.

In Ferrara, tourism arrivals rose by 4.98 percent and overnight stays increased by 4.30 percent during the first half of 2026 compared to 2025. Local officials are now focusing on integrating cultural events with local hospitality to encourage longer stays.

In the Emilia-Romagna region, Michele de Pascale, president of the region, has raised concerns regarding new government regulations for beach concessions. He noted that while concession fees go to the state, the administrative and legal costs of appeals will fall heavily on local municipalities, creating financial uncertainty for the coastal tourism sector.
