Emiliano Fernández Almazán Wins Gold at International Mathematics Competition in Bulgaria
Emiliano Fernández Almazán, a 22‑year‑old mathematics student from the Universidad Veracruzana in Xalapa, Mexico, earned the Grand First Prize (gold) at the 33rd International Mathematics Competition for University Students 2026. The competition was held in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria, from 27 July to 3 August, with exams on 29‑30 July and the award ceremony on 2 August.
Almazán scored 80 out of 100 points, tying for positions six to nine with Russian participants and surpassing peers from Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Bonn, Paris, Vienna and Mumbai. The event attracted 447 contestants from institutions worldwide and was organized by University College London, hosted by the American University in Bulgaria.
