Emiliano Martínez undergoes jaw surgery after Chelsea collision
Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano ‘Dibu’ Martínez has undergone successful surgery to repair a fractured jaw sustained during a Premier League match against Everton. The injury occurred in the 66th minute following a heavy collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite while Martínez was attempting to clear a cross.
Following the procedure, Martínez shared a photo from his hospital bed to reassure fans, stating, “The operation went well. The most important thing is that we won and kept a clean sheet. In a few weeks, we will be back.” While an exact return date has not been finalized, reports suggest he could be sidelined for 45 to 60 days, which would cause him to miss upcoming fixtures against Tottenham, Manchester United, and Liverpool, as well as November international matches with Argentina.
In the interim, 21-year-old Mike Penders made his Premier League debut, coming on as a substitute to help Chelsea secure a 2-0 victory. Penders became the club’s youngest goalkeeper in a Premier League match since 1992.
