FMF announces new Mexican football model without promotion or relegation
The Mexican Football Federation (FMF) and Liga MX have officially announced a major structural overhaul of professional football in Mexico, set for gradual implementation starting in 2027. A central component of this new model is the elimination of sporting promotion and relegation for the top-tier Liga MX. Instead, access to the first division will be governed by strict administrative, financial, and infrastructural requirements, similar to the model used by the Atlante club's recent return.
The restructuring establishes a new competitive pyramid. Liga de Expansión MX will serve as the top of this developmental pyramid, followed by Liga Premier, Liga TDP, and the amateur sector. This new hierarchy aims to focus on talent development, standardized academies, and increased investment in youth structures.
To support this transition, the FMF plans to centralize broadcasting rights to ensure more equitable revenue distribution and economic stability across the leagues. The new model also includes the introduction of cup tournaments and joint competitions to foster better connectivity between the different levels of the pyramid. While the top tier remains a closed circuit of franchises, officials noted that the possibility of revisiting promotion and relegation could be discussed once broadcasting rights are centralized.
