Emilio Lara links olive oil to the foundations of Greek philosophy

Spanish anthropologist and writer Emilio Lara proposes a metaphorical connection between olive oil and the development of Greek philosophy in his work, ‘Un mar de oro verde’. Lara describes olive oil as the ‘amniotic fluid of Greek philosophy,’ suggesting that the economic and material conditions provided by olive cultivation were fundamental to the flourishing of Western thought.

Lara argues that olive oil was a pillar of the ancient social structure, serving purposes far beyond nutrition. It was used as fuel for lighting, in religious rituals, and for hygiene and body care. Economically, the income generated from olive groves allowed certain landowners the ‘schole’—the leisure time necessary to engage in contemplative life and intellectual debate rather than manual labor.

The author clarifies that this thesis does not reduce the complexity of Greek philosophy to mere finances, but rather highlights how a specific agricultural resource helped create the social environment required for philosophical currents to emerge.
