U.S. Women’s National Team defender Emily Sonnett, 32, underwent surgery to repair a ruptured patellar tendon in her left knee and will miss the remainder of the NWSL season with Gotham FC. The injury occurred in the first half of Gotham’s 2‑2 draw with the Portland Thorns. Gotham president of soccer operations Yael Averbuch West said, “Emily has the full support of everyone at the club, and we will be with her every step of the way throughout her recovery.” No timeline for her return was given, and her availability for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil is uncertain. Sonnett has earned 118 caps for the USWNT, winning the 2019 World Cup and the 2024 Olympic gold medal, and has helped Gotham capture the 2025 NWSL Championship, the 2025 Concacaf W Champions Cup and the 2026 NWSL Challenge Cup. She is a 2016 No. 1 draft pick, in her tenth league season, and the only player to win league titles with three clubs. She recently signed a contract extension through 2028.
