Emin Alper discusses cinematic influences and Macedonian film

Turkish filmmaker Emin Alper, winner of the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize at the Berlinale for his film ‘Kurtulus’ (Salvation), has shared his reflections on his work and his appreciation for Macedonian cinema.

Alper discussed the emotional connection he holds with his various film projects, noting that ‘Behind the Hill’ established his core themes, while ‘Frenzy’ was his most challenging work. Regarding Macedonian filmmakers, he cited Milcho Manchevski’s ‘Before the Rain’ as a significant influence during his years as a film student. He also expressed admiration for the documentary ‘Honeyland’ and the recent works of director Teona Mitrevska, whom he noted is a friend.

Offering advice to emerging filmmakers, Alper encouraged creators to find their own unique voices rather than following trends and to watch a wide variety of film genres.
