Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II defies Kano horse-riding ban

Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II rode on horseback to the Sani Abacha Stadium to attend Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary celebration, defying an indefinite ban on horse-riding and Durbar processions issued by the Kano State Government on September 27.

Sanusi initially traveled by vehicle but mounted a horse at Kofar Mata to ride to the event, where Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and other dignitaries were present. He also rode back to his palace on horseback, accompanied by cheering supporters.

The camp of the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, has reacted to the incident. Aminu Babba Dan’agundi, a senior member of Bayero’s council, questioned how the state government would respond to the breach of the directive. He stated that supporters of Emir Bayero would await the monarch's return before deciding on further actions, which may include a horse-riding procession to Yakasai for a Qur’anic graduation ceremony.
