Emir of Zazzau inaugurates tree planting at Zaria city walls

The Emir of Zazzau, Ambassador Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, has inaugurated a major tree-planting initiative along sections of the ancient Zaria city walls in Kaduna State. The project marks the completion of the Women Empowerment and Climate Resilience Initiative (WECRI), an environmental program led by the civil society group Bridge That Gap Hope for Africa Initiative (BTG) and supported by the Partnership for Agile Governance and Climate Engagement (PACE).

A total of 6,000 trees were planted through the WECRI project, with 2,000 trees distributed across the Chikun, Zangon Kataf, and Zaria Local Government Areas. During the inauguration, the Emir emphasized the importance of the initiative in addressing soil degradation and the necessity of land reclamation efforts. He noted that the timing of the exercise during the rainy season provides optimal soil moisture for the saplings to thrive.

The event included participation from members of the Zazzau Traditional Council, such as the District Head of Birni da Kewaye, Alhaji Sambo Idris. Following the ceremony, volunteers and the BTG team distributed seedlings to various vulnerable zones within Zaria to promote environmental sustainability.
