Emirates Biotech and UAE University launch organic waste pilot plant

Emirates Biotech and United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) have launched a joint research project to establish the UAE’s first integrated organic-waste valorization pilot plant in Al Ain. The facility is designed to process mixed food waste streams and compostable packaging, converting them into renewable biogas and nutrient-rich compost.

The pilot plant, located near the UAEU campus, will be capable of processing up to 40 kilograms of organic waste per day. The project aims to develop technical and operating guidance to facilitate the potential scaling of this model within the UAE and internationally. By diverting organic material from landfills, the initiative seeks to reduce methane emissions, which are significantly more potent than carbon dioxide.

This collaboration supports the UAE’s circular economy, food security, and Net Zero ambitions. It also aligns with the Nema initiative, which targets a 50 percent reduction in food waste by 2030. Beyond waste management, the project serves as a platform for training students and researchers in waste-to-resource technologies.
