Emirates Engineering launches Material Futures Studio upcycling program

Emirates Engineering has introduced the six‑week Material Futures Studio, a programme that brings university students together with aviation professionals to devise new uses for retired aircraft materials. The inaugural cohort of 23 students from Khalifa University, Emirates Aviation University and the University of Sharjah toured Emirates Engineering facilities in Dubai, observed A‑check and C‑check maintenance, and visited the in‑house upcycling workshop where aircraft components are repurposed.

Over the programme, participants develop concepts and prototypes for upcycled products, receiving guidance from Emirates Engineering staff. The initiative culminates in a final showcase where the students present their designs. Emirates describes the studio as an extension of its broader upcycling efforts, noting that “Material Futures Studio builds on the airline’s broader upcycling efforts, such as the Aircrafted by Emirates collection of limited‑edition lifestyle pieces crafted from reclaimed aircraft materials.”

The studio supports Emirates’ multi‑billion‑dollar fleet‑retrofit programme, which refurbishes 219 Airbus A380 and Boeing 777 aircraft and channels reclaimed materials into handcrafted, waste‑reducing products, while also nurturing the next generation of aviation talent.
