Emirates NBD to acquire HSBC Egypt's retail banking business

Emirates NBD, the UAE‑based bank, signed definitive agreements to purchase the retail banking operations of HSBC Bank Egypt. The deal will transfer HSBC Egypt's retail portfolio, branch network, ATMs, customer base and staff to Emirates NBD Egypt, subject to regulatory approval and other customary closing conditions. Completion is expected in the second half of 2027.

HSBC expects the sale to generate a pre‑tax gain of roughly $300 million while retaining its corporate and investment banking activities in Egypt. The transaction is part of HSBC’s broader global simplification strategy and its decision to focus on higher‑return corporate and investment banking businesses.

Emirates NBD said the acquisition will expand its retail and wealth‑banking footprint in one of the region’s largest banking markets. Vice‑chairman and managing director Hesham Abdulla Al Qassim called the investment a reaffirmation of confidence in the dynamism of the Egyptian market, and group chief executive Shayne Nelson described it as an important step in the bank’s regional growth strategy.
