Emirates seeks rights for Milan to Lima flights

Emirates is reportedly seeking approval to launch new flight connections from Milan Malpensa to Lima, Peru, utilizing fifth freedom traffic rights. This move would allow the Dubai-based carrier to sell tickets for the segment between Northern Italy and Peru, despite not being an operator from either country.

According to reports, the airline is close to receiving formal authorization, which could potentially be granted for the 2026/27 winter season. While Emirates has confirmed it applied for the necessary permits, the airline noted that it is continuously analyzing market demand, route performance, and aircraft availability before finalizing immediate plans.

The potential expansion could significantly impact the competitive landscape for South American travel. While carriers like Iberia and TAP Air Portugal currently dominate routes between Europe and Latin America, Emirates' entry into the Milan-Lima corridor would provide a new alternative for both passenger and cargo services. This development may also present challenges for ITA Airways as it seeks to expand its own South American footprint.
