Emma Barnett reveals unplanned hysterectomy due to endometriosis

BBC presenter Emma Barnett has disclosed that she underwent an unplanned hysterectomy and gallbladder removal due to severe endometriosis. The 41-year-old host shared that her symptoms worsened significantly during the filming of her documentary, ‘Fighting Endometriosis’.

Barnett described the sudden surgery as ‘urgent and non-negotiable’, noting that while she legally consented to the procedures, she felt ‘blind-sided and robbed’ because she had hoped for medical treatments that would avoid such extreme surgery. She expressed that the procedure was a difficult and frightening experience, though she remains grateful for the ability to have had children in the past.

Barnett has been a vocal advocate for endometriosis awareness, a condition characterized by tissue growing outside the uterus. The condition is noted for causing severe pain and carries a significant economic impact, costing the UK economy an estimated £8.2 billion annually.
