Emma Bonino: State funeral held at Rome's Campidoglio

Italy held a secular state funeral for radical leader and former European Commissioner Emma Bonino at the Campidoglio in Rome. The ceremony, held on Tuesday, September 15, in the Sala della Protomoteca, was attended by high-ranking officials including President Sergio Mattarella, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Senate President Ignazio La Russa.

Bonino, who passed away at age 78, was honored by a wide spectrum of political figures from across the spectrum, including former Prime Ministers Romano Prodi and Enrico Letta, as well as leaders from the +Europa party. Speakers, including Carla Taibi and Riccardo Magi, commemorated her lifelong commitment to civil liberties, human rights, and European integration. Her coffin was draped in the European Union flag.

The event followed several days of public mourning and a lying-in-state at the Campidoglio, which drew thousands of citizens. Political leaders and international representatives, including the Spanish Ambassador, paid their respects to the woman described by Mayor Roberto Gualtieri as a fundamental protagonist of Italian democracy.
