Emma Bonino honored with state funeral in Rome

A state funeral was held at the Campidoglio to honor Emma Bonino, the historic Radical Party leader, following her death at age 78. The ceremony brought together diverse political figures, including President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

President Mattarella praised Bonino for leaving a lasting mark on the Italian Republic through her tenacious commitment to liberal, feminist, and pro-European values. He specifically highlighted her international contributions, including her battles against world hunger, the death penalty, and her role in the establishment of the International Criminal Court.

During the service, Carla Taibi, Bonino’s longtime assistant, described her as a “teacher, friend, and above all, an example.” Taibi noted Bonino’s demanding and precise nature, emphasizing her lifelong dedication to human rights, women’s freedoms, and the rule of law.
