Emmanuel Fernandez avoids red card in Rangers victory over Celtic
Rangers secured a 1-0 victory against Celtic in the Old Firm derby at Parkhead, moving within two points of the top of the Scottish Premiership. Ryan Ndjieri scored the decisive goal in the first half.
The match was marked by controversy involving Rangers defender Emmanuel Fernandez. After receiving a yellow card in the fourth minute, Fernandez fouled Benjamin Nygren in the 16th minute. The referee opted not to issue a second yellow card, allowing the Nigerian defender to remain on the pitch.
Former Rangers midfielder Andy Halliday and former Celtic striker Chris Sutton both commented on the incident, suggesting Fernandez was fortunate to avoid a red card. Halliday described the foul as a “clear foul and a cautionable offence” that warranted a second booking. Fernandez is expected to join the Nigerian national team for upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
