Emmanuel Macron critiques U.S. free speech model

French President Emmanuel Macron has criticized the American model of free speech, asserting that the version promoted in the United States is “the opposite of free speech.” Macron advocated for a framework that limits expression to protect public spaces and prevent insults, a stance that aligns with France’s existing legal structures.

France maintains strict laws that penalize speech deemed to incite or intimidate based on race or religion. Historical precedents include the conviction of fashion designer John Galliano for antisemitic remarks and fines issued to the father of Marine Le Pen regarding comments about the Roma minority. Additionally, the French government has pursued criminal charges against individuals for criticizing Islam.

Macron also addressed the legacy of Brigitte Bardot, stating she embodied a life of freedom, despite the French government’s history of prosecuting Bardot for her public views. These remarks occur amid ongoing efforts by European regulators to expand oversight of digital communication through the Digital Services Act.
