Emmanuel Macron faces criticism over jet ski photos amid French wildfires

French President Emmanuel Macron is facing intense political criticism following the publication of vacation photos in Paris Match. The images, which show the President riding a jet ski near his summer residence at Fort de Brégançon, have sparked backlash from opposition leaders during a period of severe environmental crisis in France.

As the country grapples with record-breaking heatwaves, droughts, and devastating forest fires that have destroyed over 117,000 hectares of land, critics argue the photos demonstrate a disconnect between the presidency and the struggles of ordinary citizens. Socialist Party leader Olivier Faure and Green Party leader Marine Tondelier both criticized the timing of the leisure activities amidst the national emergencies.

Opposition members, including Senator Pierre Ouzoulias, characterized the display as ‘inappropriate,’ suggesting the President should be supporting firefighters rather than engaging in luxury activities. While the Elysée Palace defended the President by stating his holiday is also a working period involving international calls, the controversy adds pressure to his domestic approval ratings.
