Emmanuel Macron awards Légion d’honneur to Scorsese and De Niro
French President Emmanuel Macron awarded the Légion d’honneur to filmmakers Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro during a ceremony in New York City. The event took place at Villa Albertine, the French cultural residence in Manhattan, while Macron was in the city for the United Nations General Assembly.
Martin Scorsese was honored with the rank of ‘Grand Officier’ for his lifelong commitment to cinema and his extensive work in preserving film heritage through initiatives like The Film Foundation. Robert De Niro received the rank of ‘Officier’ in recognition of his contributions to visual education and his support for independent audiovisual creation.
The ceremony was attended by several notable figures, including actor Leonardo DiCaprio. The honors follow recent French efforts to discuss the future of cinema, including the Lumière Summit, which addressed challenges such as artificial intelligence and digital streaming platforms.
