Emmanuel Macron leaves door open to future presidency after 2027

French President Emmanuel Macron has indicated that he does not rule out a future return to the presidency after his current term ends in 2027. In an interview with Variety, recorded during the Lumière Summit in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, Macron addressed the constitutional constraints regarding his eligibility.

Under Article 6 of the French Constitution, no individual may serve more than two consecutive terms. Having been elected in 2017 and re-elected in 2022, Macron is barred from seeking a third consecutive mandate in the 2027 election. However, the law does not prohibit a former president from running again after a break in service, potentially as early as 2032.

While Macron previously suggested he would leave politics after his second term, he noted, “I don’t exclude anything. It is quite unusual to return, but we will see.” He emphasized his respect for the democratic process, stating that the French people will elect someone else in 2027, but left the door open to future political involvement.
