Emmanuel Macron postpones visits to Nigeria and Senegal

French President Emmanuel Macron has postponed his scheduled diplomatic trip to Nigeria and Senegal, originally planned for late October. The decision comes amid significant domestic unrest in France, characterized by large-scale protests and violence related to the rising cost of living.

In Nigeria, the cancellation follows discussions between President Macron and President Bola Tinubu. Reports suggest the postponement was influenced by concerns regarding the sensitivity of a state visit during France’s internal demonstrations, Nigeria’s upcoming presidential election, and a recent Ebola case in the country. Nigerian officials noted that a visit at this time could potentially lead to accusations of foreign influence.

While the trip to West Africa was intended for diplomatic and cooperation purposes, it was distinct from Macron’s recent tour of the Middle East, which focused on securing energy supplies. The French presidency indicated that the West African engagements would be rescheduled for a later date.
